Endometrial Ablation
Heavy menstrual bleeding can easily disrupt daily life, causing many women to miss out on the events and moments that matter most. It’s often thought of as a normal part of being a woman, but heavy menstrual bleeding is actually a common medical condition — and relief is possible. Endometrial ablation, a non-surgical, one-time procedure, can help reduce menstrual flow and restore balance.

What Is Endometrial Ablation?
A safe and convenient outpatient procedure, endometrial ablation uses precisely measured radiofrequency to remove the lining of your uterus, helping to reduce heavy or prolonged menstrual flow. It’s possible that some women will stop having periods completely after the procedure.
Common Causes & Symptoms of Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
Hormonal imbalances, uterine fibroids, uterine polyps, and even endometriosis can cause heavy menstrual bleeding.
1 in 5 women suffer from heavy bleeding or painful periods, but many suffer in silence, unaware of available treatment options.
Speak to your provider if you:
- Soak through one or more sanitary pads or tampons every hour for several consecutive hours
- Need to wake up and change sanitary pads or tampons during the night
- Have periods that last longer than one week
- Pass large blood clots during your period
- Have symptoms of anemia such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and headaches
- Have severe cramping
Is Endometrial Ablation a Good Fit for You?
If other treatment options including medication or the placement of an IUD haven’t been effective in reducing menstrual flow, endometrial ablation may be a recommended avenue for relief. However, ablation is not recommended for all women. Open the conversation with your provider to help determine if the procedure is a good fit for you.
Ablation is generally not recommended for women who have:
- Uterine, cervical, orendometrial cancer
- Pelvic inflammatory disease(PID)
- A vaginal or cervical infection
- A weak uterine wall
- A desire to become pregnant in the future
- An infection of the uterus
- A scar from a Caesarean section
- Anintrauterine device (IUD)
