What is a Midwife?

Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are licensed in both nursing and midwifery to provide care from your first period through menopause and offer gynecologic and obstetric care. They have earned a graduate degree, completed an accredited midwifery education program, and passed a national board certification examination.

Midwives prioritize a woman-centered approach, empowering women to make informed decisions about their birth experience. They provide care during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum, and are experts in vaginal births. The CNM supportive model of care fosters a shared approach to decision making – giving you the tools to shape your own experience.

During postpartum, midwives offer essential care, including breastfeeding support, and addressing any physical or emotional needs of the mother.

Beyond pregnancy, midwives are qualified to provide a range of women’s healthcare services, such as annual check-ups, contraception counseling, sexually transmitted infection testing, and treatment for common gynecological conditions. CNMS can also prescribe medicine and perform minor medical procedures. By building strong relationships with their patients, midwives promote overall well-being and preventive health.

Our, midwives don’t go it alone – they work closely with OB/GYN’s to ensure access to any physician directed intervention when medically necessary. Our midwives deliver at Franciscan Health Family Birth Center Indianapolis.

Is a Midwife a Good Fit for Me? 

Women with healthy, low-risk pregnancies are most often the best fit for midwife care, but women with certain high-risk conditions may still be able to partner with both a midwife and an obstetrician to receive the additional support they desire. Also, anyone interested in supportive, preventive gynecology care who desires a strong partnership with their provider.
