Dr. Nimali Weerasooriya grew up in Bermuda and spent much of her life on Long Island, New York. She attended Stony Brook University, graduating Magna Cum Laude with an Honors in Biology. She was in the Scholars for Medicine program and attended Stony Brook University School of Medicine, where she graduated with a Research Distinction. She came to Philadelphia and began her OB/GYN residency at Hahnemann University Hospital. After the unexpected closure of Hahnemann University Hospital, Dr. Weerasooriya completed her OB/GYN residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. In residency, she received the “Golden Birth Ball” by the midwife practice, an award given to a resident who exemplifies the principles of midwifery care, particularly with respect to shared decision making and patient advocacy. She also won the Award for Excellence in Medical Student Teaching. During residency, she worked with the Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates physicians and is excited to join their team.
Dr. Weerasooriya is interested in global health and has been fortunate enough to participate in maternal health programs in Sri Lanka and Ghana. as well as medical volunteer programs in Ghana, Cambodia and Ecuador.
Dr. Weerasooriya lives in Philadelphia. She enjoys cooking, reading, snorkeling, trying new restaurants and exploring Philadelphia. She also enjoys traveling and has been to over 30 countries and 6 continents.
